About Our Beginner's Sewing Class: Stitch Series Level 1
9/23/2026
Hana Sew's sewing basics class is a series of 4 two and a half hour lessons. Each student receive a notion kit with a variety of essential tools that is theirs to keep for their personal use. All project materials are provided for students so they don’t have to shop for each lesson and is included in the cost of the series. Our goal is to make sewing approachable and fun while helping students become comfortable and confident with the basics of sewing!
Day One
We review the contents of the notion kit, go over parts of the sewing machine, go through threading the machine and winding a bobbin. Students practice stitching straight lines, back stitching and pivoting corners. The first project is a lanyard or wristlet, where students will get to practice using an iron and 1/8inch topstitching. After that, students will make a scrunchie and practice pulling elastic through a channel.

Day Two
We introduce different types of seam finishes and discuss how the right finish can enhance the durability and appearance of your project. Students then sew samples of the different seams. After that, we start our project for the day, a pillowcase that is completely finished with French seams.

Day Three
On day 3 we introduce different types of interfacings and talk about applications. Students work with fusible fleece to create three fabric trays of varying sizes, square, rectangle, and a small hexagon. They get to practice sewing on more bulky seams, a lot of topstitching, and use heat erasable pens.

Day Four
The final project is a fully lined drawstring pouch with a casing and boxed corners. Students work on topstitching, boxing corners, matching side seams, and create a casing with openings for twill tape. It's a fun challenge that brings together everything students have learned throughout the class!
