Machines We Use in Class at Hana Sew
9/23/2026
Have you ever wondered what kind of sewing machines we use in our classes?
Bernette 35

This machine is one of the sewing machines we love having in our classes for all projects. It’s straightforward to use, reliable, and gives students plenty of room to build confidence as they learn. It’s a great machine for both beginners and those who already have some sewing experience.
Here are some of the features:
- 23 built-in stitches
- one-step buttonhole function
- free arm for easy stitching around narrow areas and hemming
- 860spm maximum speed
- You can drop the feed dogs for free motion quilting and mending
Janome HD9 v2

This machine is a favorite with quilters and bag makers as it’s a straight stitch only mechanical machine. High powered, it can sew 1,600spm. Although it’s a straight stitch only machine, it has many nice features like the needle up and down positioner, thread cutter, and speed control. It can be tricky as all of the thread guides and tension discs are on the exterior, but doable with practice and using the threading guides on the front of the machine.
Brother Sergers 1034D and 1034DX

We have 3 Brother sergers at Hana Sew. Both models are 3/4 thread sergers that can stitch 1,300spm. We use these machines in class when we teach garment sewing.
